Hello all, I've read the threads on life in Greenville and I'm really worried about moving there. I don't really have a choice, got to relocate for work. I'm a black engineer and my company has a project to get in, complete, and get out. Even though it's majority black, I do not feel an ounce of ease about living there. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to live so I can mitigate the possibilities of harm to myself and loss of my personal property. It almost seems inevitable that I'll experience one of the above. Please help....

We spent a year in Greenville. We lived in Gamwyn Park and really liked it.

There is a housing area over near the mall that used to be nice. I've heard people say crime is starting to get bad in that area, but that may be just folks talking.

Also, the area near the country club is nice.

Greenville has lots of crime. There is simply no way to deny that. But if you stay away from bad areas, use common sense, and pay attention to your surroundings, you'll be fine. I never had a problem. But unlike the safe community we live in now, I would never have gone shopping or even walked around my neighborhood alone after dark.

Greenville isn't a war zone. But you do have to be more careful that you would in other parts of Mississippi.

If you have kids, pubic school is not an option. Don't even consider it. We sent our kids to St. Joseph's. It wasn't a great school, but it was much better than the alternatives.

And for the record....we had a good time in Greenville. We loved our church and our neighborhood and made some great friends while we were there!

If you go to realtor.com, you'll see that the nicer homes are on the south side of Greenville, basically south of Cypress Drive. There are parts of Greenville that are beautiful such as Bayou Rd, which South Main St forks onto, which is lined with huge homes set back from the road. If you're willling to do a 38 mile commute, you might consider Cleveland, MS which is a small college town, home of Delta State University. Cleveland has a nice little main street full of shops, a very nice performing arts center, university golf course and charming and unpretentious neighborhoods around the university. I wouldn't call it exactly picturesque, but for day to day living Cleveland seems very pleasant and safe.

I'd choose over the river in Lake Village, AR.

Definitely the Cypress Lane area or south of town, as was mentioned before. But not Bowmanor Apts. at the corner of Cypress Lane and Main. They used to be nice but not so much anymore.

Wanting to move to an area with lower cost of living. I saw beautiful homes for sale in Greeenville, Mississippi. Everything I read is negative, but the homes and prices look great. I'm confused!

the homes and prices look great because there is white flight going on in the area. I have personal experience with this not because I am from there, but because last year I sold property to an older man and his son who were desperate to find a way out of greenville. They moved from a home in the area to a partially developed piece of country where they then parked a house trailer...
