I'm not sure how slummy Philly is, but Meridian is the slummiest place I've ever lived. If the pay is better here than what you have up there, then maybe it's worth it for you.

They mentioned a couple of the nicer areas, but didn't mention that at least 40% of the residential areas look like the owners have neglected them for the last 20+ years.

Also the area has a declining population, which is a sign of severe issues. The people with abilities are starting to pack up and move away, leaving a dieing city behind them.

I live in a beautiful and historic (as if the whole city wasn't historic already) area of Philadelphia, about 5 minutes walking from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, but it's just too expensive to stay here with my current job. It would definitely be worth it for me to make the move; I plan on spending maybe 3-5 years in Meridian with this job, unless I end up loving it there.

Philadelphia is beautiful; I was in the Main Line suburbs area last year and was impressed. I've been to downtown Philadelphia before but it was like 20 years ago. As far as diversity, Meridian is socioeconomically diverse like Philadephia is. There are some lower income neighborhoods in Meridian, immediately north and northwest of the downtown area (around Highland Park which you can see on mapquest). The nicer areas are the Poplar Springs Historic District (along Poplar Springs Rd), along North Hills Rd, and anything around the Northwood Country Club and Briarwood Country Club (which is a bit newer and more suburban in feel, up Highway 39).

Drayb3,
I'm curious. Did you ever make the move to Meridian?

kkmcd asked about the Highland Park Area. Historic. The founder of country music, Jimmie Rogers was from here. The tennis courts have been converted to basketball courts. Highland Park has over the years become a place of frequent violence with shootings on a regular basis. And, at the same time, you can't hit a golf ball without hitting a church. Go to WTOK.com, a local news site and you can search for news stories about Meridian.
One of the U.S. main military flight training bases, NAS Meridian, is located north of town about 18 miles. 55-65% of the Navy and Marine fighter pilots earn their wings here. It just celebrated 50 years in existence.
Aviation air-to-air refueling was invented here by a machinist, Mr. A.D Hunter. That made it possible for Fred and Al Key to set the flight endurance record here in 1935. They flew and stayed aloft over and around Meridian for 28 days! As far as I know, that amzing feat has never been accomlished again without going to outer space. Of course, these men were in an open cockpit, single engine airplane, 28 days. That accomplishment is also a main reason that modern commercial flying began to gain confidence and become what it is today.

I realized I never followed up here. Nope, I never made the move to Meridian - I was actually offered another position here, so I'm still in Philly and working in Princeton, NJ. Since I had my interview in Meridian I have also had potential opportunities in Alaska, South Carolina, and Wyoming. None of them have worked out . I'm still plugging away though; I'll get to where I want to be soon enough!
