Accepted Job in Columbus, MS - country real estate (Starkville: transplants, rental homes)

Greetings!

First time poster here.. It's official the wife and I are moving to the Columbus, MS area

are there many homes on the waterfront? Looks to be a fair amt of shoreline with the TenTom waterway close by

The wife and I are country folks, live in a one stop light town in IN an hour from a decent sized town

Culture shock won't be an issue but leaving home and family will be.

We are going to keep our home here in IN until our son graduates college then we will decide what to do with it..

I would like to rent for 6 months to a year but may be forced into buying

there doesn't seem to be an abundance of quality rental homes.. I don't know if i want to live in town even for a short while..

We are flying down Sunday for four days and to finalize the relocation package..

We have several homes lined up to look at on Mon afternoon..

any thoughts/advice would be appreciated

Don't automatically assume that "culture shock" won't affect you here; it seems to affect the majority of transplants. Columbus is a small town that really doesn't accept outsiders all that well. We have lived here for 10 years, and outside of work, have few friends. Not that we haven't tried. Most locals are just more comfortable with the people they grew up with. Maybe you'll adjust better than most.

Also, waterfront homes are fairly scarce. The Tenn-Tom is controlled by the Corps of Engineers, and there are only a handful of areas that offer property near the water.

There are lots of homes on the market right now. Rentals are generally expensive because of the AF base. Hopefully you will find just the right one for you.

I don't know about available rentals, but here are a few tips about different areas around Columbus: In town in north Columbus are some homes and neighborhoods atop high wooded ridges, in the neighborhoods roughly between Ridge Rd and Hwy 45N.

Caledonia is about 10 miles north of town. It was a small farm community but is now dotted with new subdivisions here and there. Just north from there across the county line, in the area east of Hwy 45 in Monroe County, just east of the community of Hamilton, is some nice rolling land that mixes woodlands and pastureland along the back roads.

The town of West Point has some charming historic cottages on the east side of town and some pretty rolling pastureland on the east and southeast side of town roughly near the Old Waverly golf club.

Near the airport, just north of Hwy 82 is Elm Lake golf course. There are a number of new homes on large open lots in this area, and the countryside between there are the river is wooded and pretty.

Another place to look for nice countryside is just west of Starkville along Hwy 12 and New Light Rd. This area is heavily wooded and dotted with homes. The advantage of Starkville is proximity to the university.

Welcome! I hope you love it here. You want North Columbus for sure if you live in town. Tell your real estate agent you are interested in Tenn-Tom property. True the Corp of engineers controls the waterway proper, but there are many houses located on creeks, etc that feed into the Tenn-Tom. If you don't have to be on the water do check out Starkville. Also houses are much cheaper out near the Airport ... if you don't have kids that are school age (not a good district). Again, I hope you enjoy it here. We moved in about 30 years ago, made friends and made a life here - love it.

we are excited and very much looking forward to the move

our son is a freshman at Purdue so no kids to worry about.. Well at least small kids if you know what i mean!

we have several houses lined up to look at, our first choice will be to rent for 6 months to a year so we can explore all possibilities..

We will probably keep our home up north as it is "home" and we have a large amt of family and my wife will be able to freely travel back and forth

lots of good decisions to make and are looking forward to the adventure
