If Hattiesburg was somewhat hit by Katrina is it safe to assume it's more expensive to insure your home there? What would it cost to insure a $250,000 home in Hattiesburg? Also, are the property taxes a flat 10%?

Thanks!

The property tax rate is not 10%. I pay about $1000 on a home valued somewhere around $150 -175k. I live in the county but if you live in the city limits of Petal or Hattiesburg, they would be a little more. Be prepared to pay dearly for you car tag here. Also, my homeowners insurance did not go up that much after Katrina. Not sure exactly what my premium is, but it's somewhere around $1000 a year also. I could look that info up if you would like. Be sure to check out insurance though as some companies are not writing new policies anywhere in MS now. It's a great place to live!

Be sure to check out the crime rate in Jackson. I do know that property taxes in Jackson vary according to which county or town you live in.

I beg to differ with Petalman about property taxes being higher. Other states tend to have higher property taxes. Car tags are expensive, but that varies according to which city you live in or whether you live in the county.
