Hello,

I'm thinking of moving from Traverse City, MI to Missoula area. I need to fly about twice a month and Traverse City has become the most expensive airport in the lower 48, with flights often over $1,000.

In Michigan I enjoy walking in the woods, fishing, xc skiing. I would love to live in the woods but need fast, reliable broadband for my job.

I have a few questions about the area:

1. How available and reliable is high speed broadband? Can you get it in smaller towns or just in Missoula? I would love to be able to live in a smaller town within an hours drive of the airport.

2. How is it to fly out of the Missoula airport in the winter? Are flights often delayed?

3. I'm not a fly fisherman, but I fish all the time here in MI. Are there other types of fishing opportunities?

Thanks everyone!

Greg

We live out in the "boonies" and get excellent broadband. Montana airports expect extreme winter conditions and are usually prepared for it. I only been out of Missoula airport a couple of times but haven't had any problems. You want fishing? Montana has fishing. You will love it.

Would it be better to fly out of Spokane?

Hi Greg... I'll try to help you out here.

1. For internet, it really depends on exactly where you are. I'm in a relatively rural area about 15 miles from Missoula, and we get excellent broadband internet. Other areas aren't as lucky, so you'll want to research if you're interested in a specific area. But it's definitely possible.

2. Missoula is also a pretty expensive airport to fly out of. For family trips, we often fly out of Spokane. When you're saving $200 or so per ticket for a family of 5 - it definitely makes it worth the drive. But road conditions can be hit or miss in the winter making it a challenge if you're traveling often to catch flights. As far as the winter weather affecting flights in Missoula, it happens more often with arrivals than departures. Our airport was built in an area known for heavy fog, so landing can be a challenge and occasionally incoming flights get re-routed to Helena or Butte.

3. Yes, there are a lot of fishing opportunities. There are plenty of lakes within an hours drive, and the streams are just as popular with anglers as fly-fishing.
