I grew up in Missoula in the 80s and early to mid 90s, and then moved away 18 years ago. While I have been back to visit a handful of times since then, it has only been for a few days at a time (combined with visits to Yellowstone, Glacier, etc.), so not really long enough to give me much sense of what is going on in town, other than the fact that it has gotten much larger (both population wise and area wise).

I am now considering accepting a job in the area, and since the initial interview (which was in the beginning of September), I have been trying to keep up with the Missoulian every day. And it seems like crime is out of control there, at least for the size of the town/city! I am wondering how much of this is a real increase in crime, and how much is just my perception (maybe everything I read was an anomaly, and crime is usually not that bad, or maybe it is just so much worse than when I was growing up there that it seems a lot worse than it is).

I have asked a few people I know who still live there, and gotten a mixed reaction. Some say it is still a great place to live, and yes crime is worse than it was in the 80s and early 90s, but it still not that bad. Others say that it crime is definitely on the rise, and that there is even more unreported crime going on because everyone wants to maintain a good image of Missoula (gotta keep the Outdoor magazine rating as one of the best places to live, etc.). One person told me that there are now gangs in Missoula, but it is something that no one talks about, and that they are trying to keep the gang crime from public view.

So is it still a good place to raise a family, or not so much anymore? I do not need any advice about weather, jobs, cost of living, the inversion, etc. I just want to know about crime. Thanks.

Keep in mind that police and sheriff's departments run on funding. They get by that funding by prooving their worth. So when that 6' year old boy was off with a bicycle, they no longer take him to his parents and tell them so they can make the kid apologize, instead the police charge him, haul him downtown to traumatize him until his parents pick him up. Hey, there's another check mark, means more funding next year.......... Instead of allowing parents to do what is right.
