Those who grew up here, or moved here for work, or retired here for some peace and quiet are all in general agreement that we like it because it DOESN'T have what you are looking for, i.e. lots of bars and nightlife, giant malls, you know, all the metro stuff you're going to miss.

Why are you moving to Rolla? To be happy, you're going to have to learn to love hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and floating, because the outdoors is what we've got. What little indoor culture we have is provided by the University and Arts Rolla. Go to Rollanet.org and browse around a while.

Some of us consider the banjo an implement of culture, along with guitar, mandolin, fiddle and bass, so we consider monthly jam sessions to be great achievements in music. We also like gospel singings some of the churches have.

Also, we are looking forward to high school football season. The RHS Bulldogs were pretty good last year, and we have hopes for an even better year.

The band will be performing at halftime of home games and will host a big marching band festival in October.

There's all kinds of small-town things to get involved in, activities we find interesting, uplifting and fun, but they're all quite tame compared to what you are accustomed to up there in big ole Naperville. Is it too late to reconsider moving here?
Yes it is to late. I took a new job and start Sept. 1st. I will say I am pretty nervous about moving here after that post. ie i don't hunt, hike, camp, or fish, and I don't really know what floating is. I do like boating and being on the water but I don't think there is a lake here in Rolla. I just want a nice home in a nice area for around 900-1100 bucks but I can't really find anything online and the only place i did find was from investment reality which everyone seems to hate but won't really tell me why.

Thanks for all of the replys and it looks like I will just need to come down and see it for myself.

also what are the cable and internet companies down there?

Sorry, OB, but no marching festival this year. And I don't expect one until the field is changed to turf, and maybe not even then. Our band director doesn't want the band and boosters to put in all the work we do, just to have to cancel it due to the weather and field conditions. In addition to that, a couple more schools started up festivals on the same weekend we had ours, and that took several of our regular participating bands away.

But the band will be performing at halftime at the home games...and I really like the music for this year's show!

I've never had to deal with them as a renter, so I can't give you any more information than "that's what I've heard." Sorry!

Fidelity Communications has the in-town cable. I can't remember who the outside-of-town cable company is...you can probably find out via RollaNet.com . Fidelity also does internet, and there are two or three other companies for internet, but I've only used Fidelity, and for a few years in the mid- to late- 1990's RollaNet.

Skiguy,

I lived for many years in a small town of 10,000, and I was perfectly content there; and I most recently lived in a major metro area of 3 million people, and I enjoyed living there too. It's what you make of it. So far, Rolla has been nice. It's calm, quiet, people in general have been very nice and friendly. St. Louis is only a 100-mile shot up the freeway, and it's a great metro area with countless things to do. So although Rolla may not be a beacon of modern culture and nightlife, it's a nice town, and you can easily head up to St. Louis for some adventure.

The negative things we heard about Investment Realty mostly involved their monopolizing the rental property in the area and manipulating situations to make money off of people. We were told that they primarily target college students, and they are notorious for finding reasons to keep renters' deposits following move-out. But it can't hurt to keep your appointment and see what they have to offer. We do know a family who is renting one of their townhomes and is happy with it.

My husband and I got our cable/Internet through Fidelity Cable right here in town.

PS: We also found the Internet to be a poor resource in our search for rental housing. However, there are some very nice, reasonably priced homes for rent here that are not being advertised publicly, but you can find them through real estate agencies.

I meant to post a welcome to you the other day, but in looking back through my posts I see I didn't get it done, so... Welcome to Rolla!

Default What's wrong with Investment Realty

Hey all -

As a soon-to-be Rolla resident, I can give some insight into what's wrong with Investment Realty. First, they "don't charge deposits." But, they charge you an inflated first month's rent; clearly just a way of charging you a non-refundable deposit. Second, I informed them that I have pets (3 cats), and it was not until I asked specifically if there was an extra pet deposit that they told me they charge an extra $25 per MONTH per PET. So I have to pay $75 a month just to have my cats... No thanks. I've gladly paid non-refundable pet deposits in the past (I've lived in 7 rental units in 2 states), but this is the most expensive fee I've ever seen. And they were also quick to point out that if you "got rid of" any pets during your lease they still charge you the monthly fee (which for me translates to, "if your pet dies you still pay for them")... That was pretty off-putting. Finally, their prices seem to be inflated, compared to what you can find by doing a little digging on your own.

My husband and I ended up finding a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on Rollanet for a reasonable price and with a reasonable pet deposit, and the landlord is a nice couple that used to live in the house and now rents it out. So, check the Rollanet!

I wonder how everything worked out for this young feller.
