This doggone storm blew out yet another cable modem and I have to (with permission ) tap into my neighbor's satellite internet connection until manana. Ahhh country living rocks!! I hope all of our MO folks made it through this one is fine shape.
Well, our radio is on order. This morning we ordered a 'Midland WR-300 All Weather/Hazards Alert Radio'. It should be here in 3 days. According to the information we read about it, it should have everything we'd need to be alerted by all of the major reporting agencies.

We looked to see if it was available locally, but alas, no luck. Walgreens had the Midland WR-100 for $29.95, but we wanted one with an AM/FM radio also, so we had to order the WR-300. Hopefully it's a good one.

Since so many of you stated that everyone should have one, it would have been foolish of us not to have one ourselves, ya know?

I saw one radio that had a crank generator to charge the radio & Cell Phone batteries, and had built in & removable flashlights, but DH felt they were too cheap in design. Does anyone have any experience with these types of radios?

Thanks for being patient with us newbies.

Boof - we all be newbies, at one time and/or at something.

As to that crank type - have heard/seen good and not so good about 'em. Brand and model seem to vary quite a bit w/ their quality.

Hope ya are happy w/ the WR-300 - having the AM/FM is important, IMHO - can then hear the local/regional stations' reports/updates/news too.

Thanks for the 'Thumbs Up'. I feel better now. It's always nice to hear from someone who knows the scoop.

I have the WR-100 because that was all we could find locally when we moved here and that lil puppy has served us well. I'm sure you will be very happy with the more robust version as the radio can certainly come in handy! Do you have cell phone chargers in your vehicles so you can recharge them via the car battery? If not I would think about snaggin' one or two when you get a chance. Saved me a time or two since I never look at the battery level on my phone For those that don't have one of these radios I sure hope you follow in Boof's footsteps and getcha one!

Jams,
I can't believe how unprepared I am!!! I didn't think of an option to charge the Cell Phone. But, since you mention it, yes, I do have car charger. Whew! Got past that one by the skin of my teeth, eh?! hehehe I just might get one of the cranking units too, just for back up.

As always...thanks for bringing up these little details that are easily overlooked. It's those little guys that become BIG real quick!

Getting Wiser,
Boof

My husband bought a Storm Tracker made by Vector and it also says ToughBrite on it. The model is VEC135. It has a TV/Lantern/AM/FM/Weather alert radio. It can run cordless or corded and is hand crank rechargeable.

My husband saw it on sale at Home Depot for $39.95 so he snatched it up! I think it is usually $49.95 there but most places I saw it online today are selling it for $59.95. Here's the link to Home Depot's page, in case anyone's interested:
Vector Tough Brite Storm Tracker - VEC135 at The Home Depot (http://tinyurl.com/37qjzy - broken link)

Ahhh, so many posts...so little time! I'm off to the movies!

Later!

Howdy,,,

Been looking at something similar to the following "Xantrex 852-2000 XPower Powerpack 600HD Portable Backup Power Source".

Have a car starter version, that has been lifesaver over the past few years.
