Are you referring to Alton, the county seat of Oregon County? If so, its located in a quite rural area, surrounded by beautiful land - rolling hills, springs, streams, etc. Abundant wildlife, fishing, hiking, floating, and the such are in that area. With all that said, as you can tell, its a rustic region - quite a few [3-4] hours from nearest 'city' [Memphis, Springfield, StL, Cape G., and the such]. Just depends upon what you are looking for - if scenic, natural, outdoors type environment [Irish Wilderness, Greer Spring, 11 Point River [my most favourite MO river] - you got it Don't know much about the town itself, as just passed through and/or acquired supplies therein, but the area,,, great for a hillbilly as I...

We have lived in Thayer for three years and have friends in Alton. Nice quiet area. Rolling hills. Agriculture is mostly cattle with a few goats, hay, and a little local logging. No crops. Seems very slighly cooler and more ice prone in winter than Thayer but a little more rain the past three years. We have livestock and a couple of ponds so wished we had some more rain.

Alton is about 18 miles from West Plains where there is a hospital, regional shopping, lots of services, etc. About 1.5 hours from Springfield.

We have only been to Springfield twice in three years we have been here. Haven't missed it. We like small town rural life and don't depend on someone else to provide our stimulation or excitement. Good land prices in the Oregon County area but except for West Plains not a lot of job opportunities. Great place to retire. Friendly but reserved people.
