We were thinking of moving to Branson, or surrounding area, but are a little nervous about the really hot summers that I have been hearing about. Are there any more mountainous areas that are a bit cooler in the summer??

All of Missouri is going to be fairly hot and humid in the summer. Missouri does not have any large micro-climates because the Ozark Mountains are not very high. The area of the state with the coolest climate is around Kirksville, which is in northern Missouri. It is a college town, but has fairly flat terrain. You probably should look further north of Missouri if you want to escape the hot and humid conditions. Highs are typically around 90F in the summer and lows are near 70F. Cooler overnight lows are found in the rural areas. However, this summer it has been well over 100F in areas of the state because of the drought.

Default Go North for Cooler Temps...

That's right...the further north you go, the milder the summers.
And the colder the winters.

This summer the temperatures in Branson were extreme...seems to go along with the rest of the country.

The worst heat is generally concentrated in late July - early August.

Where are you coming from, Bettsnow? Depending on what you're used to, the summer heat of the Ozarks might be more bearable than you think.

Default How hot is hot?

You don't know hot until you live in Las Vegas NV or Phoenix AZ.
Branson is mild comparatively.

After 5 years of summers in Las Vegas where it's routinely over 110 in the summer and seldom doesn't cool down below 90 at night in July/August, the Branson summer has felt down right mild. Even the humidity felt good..

It's all relative and you get used to it.

All of Missouri is hot and humid in the summer. Way too hot for me, anyway, but I still like a lot things about it. Anything above 75 is too hot by my tastes...don't like to sweat...it makes me un-nice to be around. Kirksville isn't really flat, by the way. There's mostly nice, gently rolling hills up there. The areas just west of town are even forested quite a bit. Northern Missouri might be my favorite part of the state, even though I don't live there. The threat of tornadoes seems to be the same wherever you go in this part of the country. Parts of Iowa, especially south, seem to be a notch cooler, with culture and terraine being very similar. There aren't any "micro-climates", but the Ozarks seem just a tad bit less humid than the areas surrounding them. I've lived in Little Rock and Kansas city, both seem to be more humid than southwest Missouri.
