The Ozarks of southern Missouri have very dangerous roads. I went down to the Thayer area coming from Sikestown on 60 I believe and the highway was scary, I did not drive very fast at all. I cannot imagine driving there at night I simply don't know how the locals do it, especially if there was an emergency. It is awful because you don't know when the road is going to come to a steep drop or sharp curve, you just have to stay on the lookout and there is no place to move over. Not sure what would happen if you had car trouble.

Ain't no dangerous roads in MO. Only dangerous drivers. Road just sits there. Its the drivers that make the mistakes... You want to see roads that test a driver, go out west and try some of the two-lanes in the mountains. Missouri has nothing on them.

I drive from Rolla to St. Robert and back every weekday for work; I drive I-44 between 5:15 and 5:45 in the mornings but I drive home from 3:15-4:00 on Old Route 66 (except for one short stretch to get across the creek). It takes me longer, but I just feel safer driving at a moderate speed on the old highway without trucks and Illinois drivers passing me.
haha what are they doing down in Missouri? Actually we have lot of them in WI too.. they love flying by everyone going 85-90 MPH.

I have a lot of family in Ellington down off of Route 21 and there are crazy hills and twists and turns down there. It's a little uncomfortable to a guy from St. Louis. We have hills in St. Louis, but not like this. My cousins have been driving these roads all their lives so they will just fly down these hills, and I'm just holding on for dear life

Agreed. And can anyone tell me why folks just won't wear their seat belts? I've been tracking fatal accidents in our part of MO this year, and 90% indicate seat belts were not in use. Can't say they would have survived had they been on, but chances may have been better.

I'm not sure what you consider "dangerous" in Missouri. I'm from Boston and currently live in Florida, so my experiences on both I-70 and Hwy 50 up there were overwhelmingly positive. You Midwestern drivers are some of the most polite I've ever seen!

When we lived in Missouri - I-70 through Boone County was terrible and the standard saying was "Boone County, home of the broken road" as they almost never maintained that road.

Other than that, Hwy 47 from Warrenton to Washington was very tricky in the winter. You literally had to hope and pray that it was cleared and that the other drivers were careful on the road.

In case you haven't realized, Missouri and Illinois share a border...it's not exactly down in Missouri. Missouri is the Midwest just like Illinois is.

The concept of a "dangerous" road has always mystified me. If you drive prudently and carefully then no road is "dangerous". Just because people are too stupid to slow down when it rains or snows, or drive over the speed limit and get into wrecks has nothing to do with the roads. There are crosses all over the roads on nice, straight parts of the road because someone wasn't paying attention and simply ran off the road and managed to kill themselves or someone else.

Roads don't kill people. People kill people.
