I do remember that he wasnt the sort of man that was prone to exaggeration.
Cypress swamps makes sense for habitat. I had a friend in FL who claims to have seen more than one in the most remote areas of central FL outside of the everglades when surveying to run utility lines through swamp areas.

I live on the edge of the Ocala National Forest on the banks of the Ocklawaha in Central Florida, we do see Florida panthers occasionally, regular bobcats quite often, and Florida black bears waaaaaay more than we wanna.

At this point from what I have heard no females or cubs of mountain lions have appeared at this point in Missouri.

In terms of past animals there is debate that the Florida Panther did exist in the Southern Half of the state, but it is uncertain due in part of weather they really are a seperate species or just a subspecies of Mountain Lion.

Another big cat that did exist here until the last ice age was the jaguar. In a number of caves jaguar bones have been found.
