Camp Gaillard

During WWI, St.Louis had an army training encampment of the 12th Engineers named " Camp Gaillard." The camp was located along the Mississippi River in what is now North Riverfront Park. No tents were available to house the soldiers so they stayed in " quarter boats " that were moored on the river. It was occupied from May 25th to July 25th 1917.
St.Louis was also home to another type of training during WWI. In April of 1917, the Missouri Aeronautical Society was established in St.Louis to train balloon pilots for war. The Missouri Aeronautical Society Balloon School was the first training school in the nation to be officially recognized by the War Department as a training school for the United States Army Aeronautical Corps.

PIKERS

I did a little research on the term "Pikers" and discovered one explanation was it originated in California during the 1849 gold rush. Folks there began to notice that a lot of the people they encountered were Missourians, a good number of them from Pike County, so they just started referring to anyone from Missouri as a piker.

What is a Piker?

Urban Dictionary: Piker

ON THE TRAIL OF JOE BOWERS

While I was looking up pikers and the California gold rush I came across the name of a song that was very popular back then called " Joe Bowers." It was about a man from Pike County,Missouri who went to California to look for gold. I found plenty of versions of the song on youtube and I think I might have heard it in an old western movie once. I decided to look up Joe Bowers to see if there really was such a character and I got different information. Most seem to agree that the song was written by a California songwriter from Pike County named John A.Stone. I kind of agree because after I found Stone on findagrave.com I noticed he has the name Joe Bowers on his headstone.

Radioactive Snow
(I saw a guy last year in Earth City who I first thought was looking for coins with a metal detector but he was near the landfill where they had the radioactive waste. He wasn't wearing a rad suit or anything, just checking the ground along the fence with his instruments. I wonder if that was the same guy in the video ? )

Lilliput, Missouri

In 1818, an uneducated rural man living near the Meramec River fifteen miles southwest of St.Louis, in what today is Fenton, Missouri, accidentally unearthed several stone box graves of prehistoric Indians. Because bones in such interments are often deliberately disarticulated to fit in the small " boxes," he assumed the thousand-year-old skeletons to be those of a diminutive race. The following year, Thomas Say, the zoologist of the Stephen Long expedition, excavated several graves at the site and discounted the pygmy interpretation. Despite Say's pronouncement, settlement in the area was for a time called Lilliput, a reference to the fictional, tiny people in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
