Mark Twain was born in 1835, shortly after a visit from Halley's Comet. He was quoted as saying, " I came in with Halley's Comet and I expect to go out with it." He died in 1910, a day after it returned.

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) got his younger brother Henry a job on the riverboat Pennsylvania in 1858. Henry died that same year when the Pennsylvania had a boiler explosion.

In 1864, while working for a Nevada newspaper, Samuel Clemens challenged a rival Nevada newspaperman to a duel but fled before an actual fight took place.

The character Huck Finn was supposedly based on a poor kid Clemens grew up with named Tom Blankenship who was born near Ralls County, Missouri, in 1839.

Major James Lampton (1817-1887)
Mark Twain's cousin

Missouri produces one million bushels of apples each year. The three most commonly grown are Jonathan, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious, but the state also grows Gala, Fuji, Wine Sap and Rome Beauty. Fuji apples stay fresh the longest, they can last months before going bad.
