Busch bought the St.Louis Cardinals in 1953 for almost $4 million from a group headed by a local man named Fred Saigh. Saigh would soon be sent to prison for income tax invasion, but was able to make some deals beforehand that prevented a group from Milwaukee from buying the team and moving it to that city.

St.Luke's Hospital admitted its first patient in 1866. At that time, the hospital was located in what is now downtown St.Louis, and was staffed by seven physicians, nursing was provided mostly by family members. Episcopalians founded the hospital with the mission of providing health care to any and all St.Louisans, regardless of their ability to pay. The hospital was named after St.Luke, the patron saint of physicians. In the first 10 years of its existence, St.Luke's Hospital treated 7,000 people free of charge.

In last night's game against the Cubs, Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty took first base after getting hit in the right elbow by Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta. He stole second base but was hit in the left elbow by a throw from the catcher. He then raced home on an infield hit by Kolten Wong and was hit in the head by a throw from Cubs second baseman Javier Baez.
This kind of reminded me of an incident I read about that happened on August 17, 1957. Richie Ashburn of the Philadelphia Phillies hit spectator Alice Roth with a foul ball, breaking her nose. As Roth was being carried away off the field on a stretcher, Ashburn hit her with another foul ball, breaking a bone in her knee.

On September 18, 1880, the first settler in Arkoe, Missouri, Dr. Talbott, was shot and killed at his home. His wife and sons were suspected and arrested for his murder. His wife was eventually released and the sons were tried, convicted and sentenced to hang. They were executed in Beal Park on July 22, 1881. News accounts estimated 10,000 people showed up to watch the hangings. It was the first legal hanging in Nodoway County. The brothers are buried in a private cemetery near Arkoe. The tombstone reads "We Died Inocent," with the word "Innocent" misspelled.
