I've seen some nice properties/land in La Plata. What is the culture & mentality in this area? Small town feel? Too isolated? Religious/conservative?

I've been through ti many times but never stopped. It's a small town with its main attraction being an Amtrak station. There's a hotel, gas station, couple of restaurants, I think, but pretty small. The nearest "big" town is Kirksville to the north. I wouldn't call it isolated and I'd guess the people there tend to be more conservative being more of a small country town.
