I just read a book, finished it today, actually titled "Bettyville" about a man trying to care for his aging widowed mother and his reflections on life in Madison and then when they moved to Paris. It was a very good book I highly recommend it. I can't remember the author's name - I returned it to the library today also. He eventually moved to New York City (LAST PLACE I'd choose) but then went home frequently until his mother got sick and then he stayed for don't know how long - at book's end he was still there. He did a good job creating the small town feel that rang true but where I grew up was not that small but I could identify.

They sounded like nice people living there but then later on they began to experience the drug problems but of course a smaller scale. It sounds like the town is disappearing eventually, things closing down. I think small towns are easier if you're born into them but then I'm sure some are easier than others. I wouldn't have minded living there the way he described it but I'm older and retired and just looking for peace and quiet.

You're welcome. BTW the author is George Hodgman - hope she enjoys it, I did. I think it would be even more enjoyable reading it in one of the towns he's writing from/about.
