Hello, I was wondering what the closest to being a liberal city would be in Boone County? I am interested in a city that is open racially, gay-friendly, ok with democrats, supports medical marijuana. I live in a different State but have had a few opportunities offered for work in Missouri. One is in Boone County and the other Cape Girardeau.

Thanks in advance.

You have Columbia, and home to the largest state school in MO and it's fairly liberal.

Anyway, Boone County as a whole tips Democrat but it's not deep blue like St. Louis and the nearby areas are pretty Republican.

It's not as liberal as St. Louis city though if that's what you're asking and a lot more moderate than Cape Girardeau. Like most of Missouri the surrounding areas are Trump country big time.

Boone County is only one of 4 counties in MO that votes democrat in presidential elections if you include stl city. Pretty impressive MO has over 100 counites only 4 democrat.

Thanks so I think I will accept the Boone County option over Cape Girardeau. I need a more liberal area. I am really grateful for you answering my questions in both threads. Thanks so much.

Columbia. We lived there for 5 years in the early 2000s and had a great experience. Very livable town, but as MOforthewin points out above, the surrounding rural areas are not liberal.

It makes more sense when you consider that those four counties alone contain over a third of Missouri's population...

Also, One of them, Jackson County is more moderate as well. While it goes democrat in elections it is not as Democrat as St. Louis county for example. It's really only stl city and stl county that are deep blue.

Really it's only stl county and city that are swing very heavily democrat.

I would definitely suggest Columbia over Cape going on the interests/concerns you expressed in your first post.

What others have said...As an unabashed liberal many had suggested Columbia to me, and I like everything about it BUT the congestion and traffic. I escaped Chicago 20 years ago and don't want to go back to clenched teeth driving. That said, it's a pretty comfortable town for us populists. Really nice restaurants and amenities. Prettiest part of the Midwest.

Columbia can be a little congested right around the University but it's absolutely, positively, *nowhere* near Chicago's traffic. You might have to wait through a couple of light cycles at an intersection is all, but you can go from north of Columbia down Providence down past Rockbridge in less than half an hour, and that's the busiest route in the city. Trying to go through St. Louis's 44/55/64/70 interchanges right near downtown during rush hour is MUCH worse, and even that is much less traffic than what Chicago has.

Back to the OP's question, downtown Columbia and the University, so essentially the area inside of Broadway, Providence, Stadium, and Old Highway 63, are fairly liberal because of the University. The rest of town ranges from somewhat liberal to moderately conservative depending on neighborhood, and the rest of Boone County is typical rural Missouri solid red conservative. The overall effect is that Boone County is a bluish purple county.

The most liberal (as in Democrat/socialist/"blue") area in the state is clearly St. Louis City. STL is a corrupt Democrat political machine on par with Tammany Hall. St. Louis County is a close second. Jackson County which contains Kansas City is third and those three plus Columbia proper are what keep Missouri from being to the right of Wyoming in elections.

Gays, socialists, and dope are widely celebrated in central Columbia, and in much of STL and KC. The rest of the state in my experience generally won't say much if anything about any of those groups unless they are extremely flamboyant, and socialists would get the most flak by far because they are known to actively oppose the lifestyles of the locals and want to tax/restrict/ban most if not all the things the locals like.

65 year old grandmas hauling 5 pounds of meth seem to be the norm in central/southern MO and many 'socialists' "actively oppose the lifestyles of the locals and want to tax/restrict/ban most if not all the things the locals like."[
