lol, actually, underground is NORMALLY a much more safer place than above...

All depends on a few various factors [apologies for the dusty geologist hat on my noggin at the moment ]:
1. severity/strength of the 'quake
2. distance between the epicenter and the cave
3. direction of the cave's orientation versus the epicenter
4. depth of the cave and depth of the epicenter
5. type of rock, age of cave, etc.

In a nutshell, keep in mind that what we feel on the surface from an earthquake are the wave transfer phenomena, where the energy that was released is moving through the solid ground. This NORMALLY would not effect a cave [besides material that is already suspect to collapse/fall], as the waves would pass right through. I've not experienced this, that I am aware of, but those old timers that I've caved with have relayed stores; the most well known and to me coolest one occurred in a favourite hole of mine in Arkansas... guys were mapping/surveying in the cave, felt a slight rumble during the trip, and then later on the way out they claim to have discovered a house-sized boulder that hadn't been there on the way in . This was the quite large 1964 Alaskan earthquake. Have heard similar stories where a rumble is heard, but no effect at all is seen inside the cave, while above ground various amounts of damage occurs - again, this is due to that waves [and keep also in mind that there are 4 main different types of waves - each with its own characteristic/propagation technique] traveling through the rock underground just "simply" pass through, but at the surface the waves are free, therefore the vertical movement of the waves cause havoc. Granted, I do not desire to actually be underground in the midwest when the New Madrid quake burps... I think that would be tad bad timing!

Also, there is a seismograph station located in beautiful and open to the public Cathedral Cave in the Onondaga Cave State Park - can watch the readings in the visitor's center.

Default Another aftershock...

Apparently we had another substantial aftershock early this morning, lingering from Friday's earthquake:

Gotta be honest - I didn't feel or hear a thing! How about you?

I just read on IRIS that there was another one this morning--a 4.5. Now they're concerned that it could "wake up" New Madrid. I hope not--my 91 yo G-ma lives down there.

Me either and I'm in St. Loo too. That's my heavy sleeping time of the day though. The only one I felt was the first one.

What do ya'all think when you feel an earthquake? I mean its such a rare thing for you. My nephew thought trees were falling down the first time he felt one. So I wondered whar a first thought might be for someone who has never felt one.
I live next to train tracks so everytime a train starts to come, my first thought is earthquake! I have been here 10 years and that never changes. It sounds exactly the same. Our room shakes also so it takes me a second to realize " oh its just the train this time"

Actually Ben, I've had earthquakes on the brain since I read "The Earthquake America Forgot", about the New Madrid quakes of 1811-12. I've known for a long time that we're overdue for a significant quake, though not of the magnitude of the 1812 quakes, which may have had some quakes almost up to 9.0. (though who was counting then?) There were aftershocks almost daily during that time, and the people in the area got religion quick.

That said though, I thought a windstorm or tornado was hitting the house at first, since tornadoes are a more frequent occurrence in Mo than quakes. I've got to tell you though--Ca might get quakes more often than we do, but ours go out to a much further distance and can do more damage for the same magnitude as a CA quake. Something about the way the ground waves travel. And we're not even on a plate boundary.
