Did "The Beverly Hillbillies" show ever clarify where the Clampetts moved from? I was just talking with someone whom swore they said they were from Arkansas on the show. I thought they were from the Ozarks of Missouri. I think I recall an episode filmed at Silver Dollar City.

The show's creator, Paul Henning, is from Independence, MO. I think the show referenced Eureka Springs, AR and Branson, MO, but I'm not sure where they were from.

I vaguely remember the Silver Dollar City episode of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Also, I distinctly remember Festus Hagin saying he was from Stone County, Missouri, on a Gunsmoke episode.

well there's a thread over in the Arkansas forum about this, here's what I found on the Web...

Bug Tussle

The Beverly Hillbillies was a TV sitcom about a hillbilly family living in Southern California of the 1960s.
The patriarch strikes oil while hunting on his land near a fictionalized hamlet called Bugtussle in the Ozark Mountains. He then listens to the advice of friends, neighbors and extended family members, and moves with his family to Beverly Hills, California, with the resultant wealth.

I remember Ellie May referencing Eureka Springs in the pilot episode.

I always thought they were from Bug Tussle, Tennessee. They just visited family in Branson. They mentioned Joplin in an episode too as a "big city".

Did you know the original truck from the show is at the Ralph Foster Museum at the School of the Ozarks? It's a fascinating museum of all different kinds of things. Worth a trip on a cold winter day with nothing else to do.

Just as a note to reference...the Beverly Hillbillies were nowhere close to depicting real life in Branson and Southwest Missouri. I asked my dad about it recently and he said that the show was a laughingstock amongst him and his friends. Of course, Branson seems to have a lot of hillbillies and southern influence compared to Joplin and Springfield, which have much less Southern influence and are much less Southern-feeling/acting.

Really...that explains I guess why it's called Beverly Hillbillies. I only know what my dad told me about the show...I figured it must take place in Southwest Missouri from what I heard about it.
