Kansas City Journal March 23 1898

ROBBED A YOUNG FARMER

A young farmer who gave the name of Howard Hastings found his way to the Grand avenue police station at 11 o'clock last night and told a peculiar story about having been held up. Captain Flahive questioned the young man closely and found no reason to suspect that he was not telling the truth.
Hastings said that he had been working for Daniel Ensign, a farmer living 13 miles southwest of Westport, and had started to walk to Kansas City yesterday afternoon. He was about 3 miles south of Westport when he overtook 4 men who had been walking slowly towards the city. It was then about 7:30 o'clock. Hastings spoke to the men and one of them turned suddenly about and placed a revolver to his head. Hastings threw up his hands, and the man, who was masked, searched him and secured $35.40.
Two of the men then seized Hastings and made him drink the contents of a bottle.
They ordered him to go back in the direction from which he had come and the men came on towards the city through the fields. When he reached Westport he was in a dazed condition and did not have a cent of money for car fare.
He did not recover his senses sufficiently to ask to be directed to the police until he reached the horse market stables at Twenty Third and Grand avenue. Although his description of the men is a meager one, it answered closely the description of the men who held up Burke's saloon at 10 o'clock.
