ARE THEY THE BANDITS

Moorhead, Minn., Nov 11 ---Six men supposed to have been engaged in the holdup of the Great Northern coast train near Fergus Falls were captured here this morning by Chief of Police Murphy. Four of the men arrived at the Exchange Hotel here together, and two others came about an hour later and inquired about the first four. All had large revolvers, two sets of burglar tools and two dark lanterns, three sticks of dynamite and four dynamite caps. Each man had three handkerchiefs. They had $200 among them.

They gave their names as W.C. Ross, J.C. Hall, C.F. Huffman, B.L. Minot, M. Morris and J.B. Edwards. None is more than 30 years old, and all are bright and intelligent in appearance. Three claim to come from Missouri. There seems little doubt that they are the men implicated, and that they had agreed to rendezvous at Moorhead. A number of other robberies including that of an elevator at Evansville and a bank at Battle Lake, are now credited to this gang.
The men tonight attempted to saw the bars of their cells. They were searched again, and seven fine saws were found sewed in the flap of a coat pocket. One of the men was recognized as Link Thayer, who played ball in Moorhead several years ago.

REVOLVER HAMMER FAILED TO EXPLODE CARTRIDGE

Because the hammer of his revolver had been filed, Adolph Maier, cashier and manager of J.W. Peckington, who owns a saloon and restaurant at Seventh and Pine streets, failed to put two highwaymen to flight and was robbed of $150.
Maier, who lives at No. 2312 South Eighteenth street, was walking home from the streetcar early yesterday morning. He was encountered by two men on Shenandoah avenue near Dolman street, who ordered him to throw up his hands.
Maier was looking for something of this kind and had his hand on his revolver in his pocket. Before the robbers had covered him he pulled it from his pocket and pulled the trigger. The weapon failed to discharge. He was then grabbed by the men and roughly handled. He was thrown down and kicked and beaten, and after a desperate struggle a bag of $150 was taken from him.
He examined the revolver when he got home. He found that the trigger had been filed. Maier says he loaned the revolver to a friend several days ago and did not examine it when it was returned. He thinks that his friend is in league with the robbers.
Maier's position makes it necessary for him to work late and he has been in the custom of taking the money which is taken in at night home with him. On account of the darkness he was unable to secure a good description of the robbers.

LOCAL CROOKS IN OMAHA

Police In The Nebraska Metropolis Having A Hot Time With Missouri Criminals

The Omaha police force is having its hands full just at present with the operations of crooks who are said to be denizens of this city. D.L. Roberts, who is better known by the title of " The Kid," took an active part in the swindle of a dairyman in that city a few nights ago and before he was captured, performed a star part in a performance in which the guns of several policemen were called into requisition. " The Kid " is now reposing in jail in that city.
Several days ago the police and detectives had a duel with two desperate men who are also said to belong to this city, in which the crooks got the better of the conflict and escaped. It has been ascertained that they are headed for this city and the police are on the lookout for them.

On January 11, 1901, Manasseh Lip****z, his son Samuel Lip****z, and Nathan Harris were arrested by Federal authorities in St. Louis. They were running a gigantic swindling scheme by which hundreds of wholesale dry goods firms from all over the country were victimized to the extent of at least $25,000 after shipping their goods to a bogus company in St. Louis.

AN OLD WOMAN ROBBED

Joplin, Mo., Nov 18---Yesterday Mrs. J.G. Mordecai, an old woman of 60 and widow of an old soldier, came to Joplin to draw three months' pension, amounting to $25. While driving along the road in her buggy she was held up by two highwaymen and robbed of every dollar she had. Both robbers were mere boys, but seemed to be experts at the business.

BANDIT ROBS CRAP GAME

Jefferson City, Mar 16---A bandit held up a gambling house on Madison street shortly after 9 o'clock last night and is reported to have obtained around $2,500 to $3,000 in currency.
Between 12 and 15 men were in the room when the bandit stepped to the door and directed them to " stick 'em up " and line up against the wall. He then told a boy named Gird Bausell to collect the money and wrap it in an old sweater which the bandit supplied. On securing the loot he backed out of the room and fled west on Commercial alley, after admonishing his victims not to call out the window for help or he would " blow their heads off."
The police say that the boy confessed that he had been " planted " in the game. Information he gave led to the arrest in Sedalia this afternoon of a man named Reed, who is accused of the robbery.
