THE JAIL FILLING UP

Last Saturday Constable Boston and Marshal Proctor, of Morley, brought E.F. Livseay and A.J. Irvin to Benton jail. About the first of January the restaurant of Thomas Bynum, of Morley, was burglarized and canned goods, tobacco, cigars, candy, etc., to the amount of $30 taken therefrom.
Suspicion pointed to these parties, but not until last Saturday were the goods found.
In the old Frobase mill shed, which is being used as a stable, the goods were found by the constable, buried in the manure. As Livseay and Irvin occupied the premises they were arrested and brought to Benton for safe keeping. They were bound over by Squire Halley Thursday.

QUARRELED ABOUT THE WEATHER

George Walker and James Harris, young negroes, got into an argument in St. Joseph on the subject of the weather. Harris, who had one or two more drinks than his companion, believed it was not below zero, while Walker, who was shivering until his teeth chattered, swore it was at least 15 degrees below. When two policemen arrived, Walker had carved Harris so badly with a razor that he will die.

CRIME IN ST. LOUIS GROWS

St. Louis, May 12---St. Louis police are faced with three unsolved mysteries today. Three sudden deaths in the last two weeks have happened, the discovery of Frank Vanek's body, crumpled up behind the steering wheel of his automobile, making the third. Several shots had been fired into his body and one through the heart.
Last Saturday the body of Miss Vera Burkhart, pretty young school teacher of East Carondelet, was found in a lonely spot a short distance from that where Vanek's body was found.
Monday, Ennis Pillow, negro messenger for the Northern St. Louis Savings Trust Co., was shot down in front of his home, following his identification of James Hogan, who had attempted to kidnap and rob him.

The authorities are equally divided as to murder or suicide in the case of Vanek's death. Pillow is known to have been murdered.
Vanek was found shortly after he had left the home of his fiancé. Neighbors heard shots, then a light automobile careened around the corner and crashed to a stop. The windshield was smashed with bullets. Vanek's revolver lay on the seat beside him. Three cartridges had been discharged. His pocketbook, containing two $1 bills was found in his pocket. Vanek was known to have left home a few hours before with $60. A check for $4,000, which he was believed to have had, is also missing.

Relatives of Vanek had often heard him say he would fight if held up. The revolver which was found was identified as his. Adolph Vanek said he had heard his brother remark that he expected to sell some oil stock for which he was to get $4,000. It is believed that Vanek was murdered by someone who knew of this transaction.
Vanek was a structural steel draftsman and was known as a " lucky investor."

BENT ON MISCHIEF

About 11 o'clock Tuesday night someone hurled a big rock into the Democrat-News office and also fired several shots, nearly scaring W.L. Preston, who was operating the linotype to death.
They are offering $25 for the arrest of the guilty one.
Half an hour earlier someone was prowling around in the back yard of the Republican but we scared him away. The night before, our office was broken into but apparently nothing stolen.

FOOTPAD ADOPTS NEW PLAN

After luring Sam Becker to Third and Chestnut streets under pretense of investigating his record as a member of a union, a footpad yesterday evening held him up at the point of a revolver and took $10 from his pockets. The robber escaped.
Becker says that he met the man at Eleventh and Morgan streets, and that he offered him a position at the World's Fair. The footpad asked Becker whether he was a member of any union. Becker replied affirmatively, but the highwayman suggested that they consult the records.
When at Third and Chestnut streets the footpad turned suddenly and putting the muzzle of his revolver against Becker's head commanded him to throw up his hands.
Becker lives at No. 1507 North Broadway. He gave the police a good description of the robber.
