BELIEVE " WIFE " SHOT HUSBAND

Kansas City, Jun 24.--Mrs. Mattie Carter, also known as Mrs. Mattie McPherson, today faced a charge of murder in the first degree in connection with the mysterious shooting of Jack McPherson, whom police said she claimed was her common-law husband.
Police are searching for two other men whom they allege are Mrs. McPherson's second and third husbands. They refuse to accept the statement of Mrs. McPherson that her husband was shot through the window by a burglar as they were preparing to retire in a practically unfurnished cottage at Mount Washington. The windows were closed and there were no broken panes of glass found. McPherson was shot twice at close range.
Mrs. McPherson was fully dressed and carried a handbag when she ran to a neighbor's and told them her husband was shot. She today denied the existence of Ernest Evans whom police say is one of her husbands. She said that John Carter, unheard of since the couple started to the races in New Orleans several years ago, is in South America but refused to say where. Police say that Carter is another former husband.
