On October 30, 1865, Deputy U.S. Marshal L.A. Hudson, who was staying at the St. George Hotel in Weston, Missouri, could not find his hat which he had placed on a hat rack in the dining room. He bought a new hat and told Mr. Bayse, the landlord, that the value of his old hat was equivalent to his hotel bill and started off toward the railroad depot.
Mr. Bayse grabbed his new hat and told him he could have it back when he paid his bill. Hudson demanded the return of his hat and drew his revolver and fired, just missing Mr. Bayse. He then arrested Bayse.
A posse comitatus was summoned and Hudson was arrested, charged with assault with intent to kill. He was released after posting $1,000 bail. Bayse went back to operating his hotel.
