CLERKS SHOOT AT OFFICERS

It developed Friday that the two Looney brothers, who fired at Policemen O'keefe and Gerk when they entered the second-hand store at No. 1723 Market street, about 3 o'clock, were employees of the place.
T.S. Beyers, who conducts the store, called at the Four Courts and identified them as his clerks, who sleep in the back of the store and guard it. Their names are Paul J. and J.B. Looney. They said they were awakened by the entrance of the officers, and, mistaking them for burglars, drew their revolvers and fired.
The officers stated they found the door open and went in to investigate. Once they were fired upon they informed the Looney brothers that they were officers but the brothers kept shooting. A warrant was issued against them charging both with assault to kill.

IN JAIL

For a long time petty depredations have been going on by which flour, canned goods and other portable articles were missed from cars standing on the side tracks of this place. Several of our merchants have found their goods thus short and a watch has been quietly kept to discover who the peculating individuals were. Saturday " Jim " Rouze was arrested and placed in the lock-up, and yesterday a hand-car was sent out west on the Q.M. & P. and returned with Lew Curtis who was also placed in " durance vile " as a partner in the transaction. We understand there are one or two other parties " wanted " in connection with the same charge.

HIGHWAYMAN SECURED $1.40

Cornelius Mindrup who resides in the west end of Edwardsville, paid $1.40 last night for a brief inspection of the contents of a large revolver.
He was going along High street on his way home to supper when he saw a young man standing at the Clay street intersection. When he reached that point the stranger remarked that it was a pleasant evening and then produced a revolver, asking Mindrup how much he had with him.
The latter produced $1.40 and the footpad, after inquiring if that was all, took it and disappeared down the Wabash tracks. Mindrup had $19 in his hip pocket. He told the police that his interviewer was a white man.
