WATCHMAN BRUTALLY BEATEN

George A. Lewis, a watchman employed by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company, was assaulted in the company's yards Saturday night by a stranger.
He sustained concussion of the brain, a dozen scalp wounds, the loss of half a dozen teeth and a bullet wound in the hand. Doctor Wilhelm, who attended him, stated that Lewis's injuries may prove fatal.

Lewis stated that he was making his rounds of the yards when a stranger approached and asked when a train for the south would leave. Lewis replied that he would have to make inquiry of the telegraph operator, then the stranger pulled a club from beneath his coat and struck him with it. Lewis drew his revolver and in a struggle for its possession, it discharged, piercing the watchman's hand.

Lewis fired several shots at his assailant and believes one of them took effect. The shooting attracted several trainmen, but the stranger ran away.

It would be interesting to see if Mr. George A. Lewis lived through that awful attack. That would be a lot to live through.
