THE JAIL STILL FILLS UP

Sunday, Sheriff Batts arrived in Benton with Ex-Marshal Wilkerson, of Sikeston, and J.M. Noble, formerly of this county.
Wilkerson is charged with embezzling city funds to the amount of $175 while marshal of Sikeston. Noble is charged with obtaining money under false pretense.
Saturday a man by the name of John L. Sullivan was brought to jail from Blodgett charged with insanity. Joe Albright is also in jail charged with assault to kill a man named Daniels.

DIED IN SPRINGFIELD

J.C. Robertson, father of Walter Robertson now in jail at Hartville on a robbery charge, was found dead in bed in his room at the Madison Hotel at Springfield.
When found he had apparently been dead about 3 days. It is believed he had committed suicide.
He had written a letter to his son, almost every other line reading " Trust in God."
It is thought that worry over his son's arrest caused him to become temporarily mentally unbalanced.

Mrs. F.M. Garrett, 2607 Renick, screamed so loud Wednesday night that a burglar decamped.



Carl Griffith, an army deserter, was arrested here Thursday, and taken back to Fort Leavenworth.


Fifteen gallons of home brew was confiscated on the Ike Jennings farm, near Kenmoore Wednesday.


John Lee of Amazonia told the police Thursday he had seen two men that morning set fire to a motor car near his place and run away.


Joe Letts was arrested Wednesday charged with selling ice that is short in weight. He was fined $10 Thursday.


Charles Beauchamp was fined $25 in police court Thursday for breaking glass in the street.


Frank Vaughn, of Rushville, was held on $10,000 bond Thursday on the charge of assaulting Dorothy Gulich, a 16-year-old Rushville girl.

GIRL'S ASSAILANTS TO PRISON

Kirksville, Mo., Aug 23.---George Patterson, a section hand, and William Miller, a fireman at an ice plant, pleaded guilty last night to an attempted assault on Eleanor Clark of Columbia. She is the 11-year-old daughter of Prof. George Clark of the University of Missouri.
Patterson was sentenced to 18 years in the penitentiary and Miller to 15 years.
The attempt was made August 15 while the little girl and her brother were waiting for a train at Kirksville.

Ben Weaver and Henry Blackwell, two farmers residing a short distance above St. Joseph, had a quarrel the other afternoon, but afterward peace was patched up and the two started home together. On the way the quarrel was renewed, when Weaver drew a knife and made a vicious slash at Blackwell, completely severing his nose from his face.

A burglar went into Frank Nicholson's bedroom last Sunday night and relieved him of $800, but left his pants and five cents on the porch.

A JAIL DELIVERY

Even Scott County prisoners believe in having a free day on the Fourth.
When Sheriff Watkins went to the jail Saturday morning, he found that all of the prisoners had gone off to celebrate. There were three, the two men charged with assault to kill Seth Minuick at Morley, and a negro whose time would have expired in a day or two.

H.C. Alexander, charged with killing a cattle drover in Nodaway County, last June, has just had his trial at Maryville. The jury, instead of hanging the prisoner, hung themselves, eight for acquittal and four for manslaughter.

James M Vincent, John Bailey, James Bailey and David Bailey have been committed for the murder of Jacob Vincent in Dunkin county on the 8th of February.


L.D. Hyde, a wealthy farmer of Chariton county, was in the circuit court at Keytesville, convicted of stealing a check, and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary.








University Missourian (Columbia) May 6, 1912

BOOTLEGGER PLEADED GUILTY

George Campbell, a negro, withdrew his original plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to the indictments for violation of the local option law in the Boone County Circuit Court this morning. Judge David H Harris withheld judgment until he investigates Campbell's record.

Evidence has been discovered by Pinkerton detectives that W.C. Buchanan, the missing cashier of the St. Louis Gunning Company, who disappeared a week ago and is charged with taking about $5,000 of the firm's funds, has been in St. Paul, Minnesota and Regina, Canada.
He has purchased a farm for $2,800.

F.M. Goddard, an insurance agent, outraged his sister-in-law at Dadeville and then skipped, but was captured and now languishes in jail, in default of $5,000 bond.
