E. ST.LOUIS SALVATION ARMY GIRL SAVED FROM 3 KIDNAPPERS

St. Louis, Apr 1.---Efforts of 3 men to kidnap Margaret Malcomb, 19 years old, a Salvation Army worker, East St. Louis, at 1:30 last night were frustrated by the arrival of Detectives Meehan and Henson in an automobile. The men had bound and gagged the girl when they were frightened away by the arrival of the detectives.
One of the men was identified by the girl as a man whom she had known in Decatur, Ill., two years ago. She told the detectives that two other Salvation Army women who had been living with her had left for Chicago, leaving her alone in East St. Louis.
While passing through the kitchen shortly after 11 o'clock last night, the girl saw three men through the window. She telephoned the police station and had just finished giving the street address when the men entered and seized her.
The girl was taken back to St. Mary's Hospital in a hysterical condition.

EARNS TRIAL MONEY, THEN SURRENDERS

Dallas, Tex., Nov 6.--- Parallee Johnson, who shot and killed Warren Harvey in Dallas, August 5, 1901, and whose whereabouts have been a mystery to the Dallas police, today surprised Justice Edward's court by walking into the courtroom while court was in session and surrendering.

The woman states that she had been in St. Louis ever since she killed Harvey, and that she had worked hard for more than 3 years to earn enough money to pay for defense of herself in court when she should be tried for the killing of Harvey.

She said she had remained a fugitive under an assumed name in St. Louis all this time for that purpose and that she is now prepared to stand trial. Justice Edwards placed her under $1,000 bond to appear for trial.

The woman's story of the killing is that she owned an interest in a wagon on which Harvey claimed, and that he came to her house and started smashing the wagon with an ax. She shot him at once for destroying her property.

Cuckoo Gangster Killed Robbing Store 1923

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/4523..._postdispatch/

Potosi Journal May 1, 1895 Pg4

Pascal Mathews, a merchant at Berryman, was shot and badly hurt by a would-be robber last Saturday night between 10 and 11 o'clock. He had left the store to aid a customer outside and returned to close up for the night when a strange man jumped from the darkness to head him off.
Mathews ran into the store and slammed the door in the robber's face. Frustrated, the man fired a pistol through the door, the ball passing through Mathew's side just below the ribs and coming out through the back. After shooting him the man mounted his horse and rode away. The wound is not considered dangerous.
