MAN ARRESTED AS SUSPECT FOUND NOT TO BE ONE WANTED

New Madrid, Jan. 6.--- Sheriff A.F. Stanley of New Madrid County said today a man who had been arrested at Kansas City on the theory that he was Ray Baker, formerly of Kennett, was found last night not to be Baker.
Baker, a former convict, is wanted in several counties including New Madrid County. He allegedly stole some jewelry in a Portageville home last year, and it later was sold for $175 in Memphis, Tenn.
Last May 20, after the Gateway Tavern at Cape Girardeau was held up, the bandit escaped across fields on foot when troopers sought to halt him. The officers announced later they wanted Baker for questioning in that connection.

His gang were robbing banks the same time Jesse James was robbing them. He died just a few weeks after Jesse James died. They robbed banks a little different than the James Gang did.

KILLING OF ROY FEAR

Milan, Mo., Jan. 15.---Monday, January 31, is the date set for the trial of Marion W. Glass for the murder of Roy Fear, near Green City, this county, May 4 last.
Young Fear, with other neighbor boys, had gone to the home of Glass to charivari him and his bride. No sooner had Fear's crowd begun their serenading then Glass fired 3 shots through the window, instantly killing Fear. When it was seen that Fear was dead, his companions asked Glass to bring a light. This he persistently refused to do.
The state claims it can prove that Glass made threats as to what he would do if any of the neighbors attempted to charivari him and his bride. The defense, it is said, will be a complete denial by trying to show that young Fear was killed by one of his own party.

SAFE DEMOLISHED
An Unsuccessful Attempt To Loot The Exchange Bank

The Exchange Bank owned by Taylor Purl was broken into Wednesday morning about 3 o'clock by some person or persons unknown, and an unsuccessful attempt was made to blow the large burglar-proof safe open. A hole was drilled in the top of the safe, directly over the money vault, and some explosive used, which almost completely demolished the large steel safe.
The bottom was blown out and the front doors were so sprung that one could almost pull them open. The perpetrators of this attempted robbery left nothing behind except a sack containing a ball of clay which was about as large as a man's fist, which looked very much like the common road clay which is very plentiful at present.
The safe contained about $2,000 and was insured for $3,000 so the owner would have lost nothing by the operation, even had the midnight visitors been successful.
The safe was opened Wednesday evening in the presence of Sheriff McCall and everything was found intact. The time lock was in perfect shape, the combination wheel was blown off on the doors. There is no clue to the perpetrators of this deed.
W.A. Muse, who has a store in the next room to the bank found most of his canned goods on the floor when he entered his place of business Wednesday morning but thought rats had done the work, not dreaming that it was caused by an attempted burglary. Our people were considerably excited when the safe was opened and nothing was found to be missing. Taylor Purl, owner of the bank, was the happiest man in town.
