Scott County Democrat Benton, Mo. Feb. 20, 1913

HE HAD $195 HIDDEN UNDER AN OLD LOG

James W. Golden, a dredge boat man, who was arrested at Blodgett on a charge of embezzlement, was released Thursday on bail after he had turned over to his creditors an assignment of his belongings and $195 in cash which he had hidden under a log.
When arrested, Golden said he had hidden several hundred dollars and that he would not tell where it was until some compromise of the case was assured. In custody of Constable Jerry Frazer, he went to an old log where he had secreted the money, Golden claimed that someone had taken several hundred dollars. He turned over the $195 to his creditors.
Golden recently drew a warrant from drainage district No. 6 for $2747.08. He and his brother W.E. Golden were successors of C.W. Beeker & Sons, drainage ditch contractors. James Robinson was the complaining witness on the embezzlement charge.

KIDS FIND CASH REGISTER ABANDONED ON ROADSIDE

A cash register stolen a week ago Sunday morning from the Saveway Service Station at Miner was found yesterday about noon in the first ditch east on the Tanner road.
Three boys, David E. Evans, 18, and John Albert Evans, 16, both of 209 Dye street and Phillip Payne, 16, of 220 Petroleum street saw the register in the water. They got it out and went and got Harry D. "Pete" Evans, 209 Dye street, and then went to the police station.
Reginald Merrick, owner of the Saveway station, went down and unlocked the Victor-McCaskey register but the money had been taken out. Evidently whoever stole the register had gotten it open and then shut it before tossing it off the bridge over the ditch.
