MERCHANT BEATEN BY TWO ROBBERS

While on his way home from his place of business last night, John Horst, proprietor of the Delmar Market, at Vandeventer and Washington avenues, was attacked and brutally beaten by highway robbers. But for the fact that the assailants were scared away by members of the City Fire Department they might have succeeded in securing the money and valuables which their victim carried on his person.

Mr. Horst closed his place of business at 7 o'clock. It is his custom to carry home with him each night all the money which is taken in at his store during the day. Ordinarily he is accompanied by his son, but last night he started home alone. As he approached his residence, at No. 3954 Morgan street, two men stepped from behind a tree. They followed him until he was about to enter a side gate. There, without any warning, they sprang upon him.
Both men were apparently young and active and since Mr. Horst is 56 years old, he had little chance against them. One of the robbers pinned Horst's arms while the other rained blow after blow on his head with the butt end of a revolver. The footpad who held Horst's arms attempted to rifle his pockets, but assistance came before this could be done.
Engine-House No. 28 is only half a block away from the scene of the attempted robbery. The sounds of the blows as the revolver struck Mr. Horst's head were heard by several firemen, who ran to the scene of the holdup. They arrived just in time to see the forms of two men disappearing down an alley.
Mr. Horst was taken into his home, where he was attended by Dr. Funkhouser of No. 4254 Olive street.
It was found that he was suffering from numerous scalp wounds and bruises, but his skull was not fractured. Pieces of the stock of a revolver were found on the pavement. This is all the evidence the police have, as Mr. Horst was unable to give a description of his assailants.

NURSE IS BEATEN BY HIGHWAYMAN

Lay Senseless In The Rain

Struck down by a footpad, who had attacked and robbed her of a purse containing $4.60, Mrs. Annie Miller, a nurse, employed at St. Luke's Hospital, was found prostrate on the sidewalk at Windemere Court and Delmar avenue by patrolmen Pine and Kelly of the Mounted District at 10:15 o'clock last night.
Mrs. Miller was still unconscious when the policemen reached her side, and her clothing was drenched with the rain as she lay senseless and helpless on the pavement.
Patrolmen Pine and Kelly were on a westbound car when in the momentary gleam from the headlight they noticed Mrs. Miller. They ordered the car stopped and returned to where Mrs. Miller was lying. They raised her from the sidewalk, rubbed her hands and succeeded in restoring her to consciousness.
Mrs. Miller told the policemen that she had disembarked from a car at Windemere court, intending to walk to St. Luke's Hospital, at Belt and Delmar avenues. As she stepped on the sidewalk, when the car had passed, she observed a man standing against a post not far away. As she passed, the man bounded at her, struck her heavily in the back of the head, grabbed her purse and ran.
Policemen escorted her to the hospital where she obtained stimulants to quiet her nerves. She was unable to give a description.
