I am so happy to find this forum.
I am a Chinese professor and will be a visiting scholar for 12 months in Universiy of Missouri Columbia from this November.
My question is to find a room to live. My Chinese friends who had visit the United States advise me to live local people, which will helpful for me to learn English and culture. But I can't find a thread on internet, so I ask cyber-friends to do some favor.
If it is possible I would like to live with a old couple, or a family which wants to share their home partly. I can afford the appropriate rental.
I am a 40-year-old honest man, I am friendly.
If you think it is impossible, Please give some advice on my renting room.
In this I hope for cyber-friends' help.

I would advise you to post this in the general Missouri section. Columbia falls outside of the scope of the Springfield-Branson area and this section probably won't get you many Columbia locals.

As a visiting scholar, I am surprised that Mizzou didn't provide you with some resources to help secure housing. This is something the school is used to dealing with.

Yes, this makes me doubt the veracity of the post, but then again I'm always distrustful of outsiders, so don't go by what I say (none of you ever do anyway).

Not to dampen your distrustfulness, but actually, to my knowledge at this time, the post, the poster, and the request are all valid. With that said, I too am semi-surprised that the UM system does not have [based on this thread] more assistance for such a person's needs... but, there may be more here than we know. Nevertheless, I've moved the thread, and hopefully some with more knowledge in the Columbia area can assist this gentleman.

so thanks for your help

There are many kinds of visiting scholar, and am a kind of my government financial aid visiting scholar. The professor of University Missouri Columbia help me a lot on my application. So I feel embarrassed to trouble him about this thing, that is the reason I maked the poster on the forums. That is my situation. I haven't and no reason to tell a lie. I just want someone can do me a favor in finding a ideal place to live before I come to the city. I think I can afford the rental from 300 to 400 dollars.

Makes me wish we lived in the Columbia area. We're older, we have the space, we've hosted students from other countries before. I've visited China and know a few words and phrases. Unfortunately, we're much too far away.
