Your comment "I would sacrifice anything to get out of this state!" might blind you to what life is like in the rural Ozarks. Just be cautious. You might enjoy the rural river counties better either along the Mississippi or Missouri -- there seems to be fewer rough edges there than in the deep woods.

Great inputs! I am just getting back around to this thread, and it is so interesting to see that two other people moved out to CA and were considering TN and the Ozarks (our checklists and sources must be similar )! I'm wondering where each of you wound up, if you've settled somewhere yet? We got out of CA and are renting a nice farm in East TN. We are continuing our search for a homestead, and we are mainly looking in TN and in the Ozarks. The house that we were going to buy in the Ozarks fell through, but we do enjoy not having to pay income tax in TN! Maybe it's just me, but I did find people in the Ozarks to be a little more down-to-earth than most of the people that I've encountered here in TN. But you find all kinds of people everywhere, so I'm not one to over generalize.

Kimichanga and Tenn or Ozark Bound, where did you wind up?

We really like quiet, rural locations.

We moved to the Ozarks about three years ago. Near Ava, Missouri about 2 hours SE of Springfield, Missouri. It is very rural and quiet, we have a house in the middle of 40 acres of woods, 1 1/2 miles down a dirt road. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It takes us 40 minutes to get into Ava, but we are 10 minutes from a country Jamboree. We love it.
