I am also relocating to the Springfield, Missouri area and am considering Marshfield, Ava and/or Billings, any thoughts on whether or not these are good areas to consider? I currently live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I was also curious as to why "Boof" (Tami) has chosen Mt Vernon? I have inlaws that live in Springfield and they love it there. However, I am looking to be more in a country setting. Thanks! Cynthia

Cynthia,

The reason we chose Mt. Vernon is because it's small and from what we see, it offers country settiings also. We want to be close to bigger cities like Springfield and Branson, but not right in the 'mix' of things.

We're actually going to try to rent for a while, and use that time to look all over the state to find a place we want to settle in. Then we'll buy a home. Preferrably with a little land.

Right now we live in an area of almost 500 people, and desperately want something less congested and busy, ya know? From what I hear, Bolivar isn't bad either. So....who knows where we're ultimately end up. But that's why I'd like to be able to talk to someone familiar with the area; to help guide us in the right direction.

Yes, we have a very nice realtor in the area, but they don't like to volunteer the 'negative' points, and in some ways, they're tongues are tied...legally. So, we'll take all the info we can get right now, and who better than someone living there?

BTW, my SIL just moved from Sacramento to Las Vegas, and just moved again to Washington state. We looked there too, but the prices were higher than we liked, and the home styles were just flat out ugly. Which is another reason we liked MO; The architecture styles are nicer, especially the older homes, which is what we're looking for.

Sorry for being so longwinded....hope that answered your question.

Yes, that answered my question. My husband and I looked at land in Oregon and Washington but the prices were way too high. We decided on Missouri because he has family there and the housing prices were reasonable. 500 people busy? That's funny, Vegas has 500 people in practically one square block these days. LOL I can't wait to get away from the traffic. That's a smart idea to rent and get to know the different areas before you buy. I do want to be somewhat close to a big city so that's why I am considering Marshfield, Billings, and Ava. Ava might be a little bit out of the way but I will take a visit and do some more research. Thanks for the info!

Although my husband has been to MO, we've never been to the area where we're moving. LOL Crazy, huh? But we've already got our house on the market, and can't afford a trip back there right now. Plus, we can't get the time off work.

We can't either, but from what other posters say, I'm wondering if that's possible. But, I'm hoping it's better than what we've got now.

When do you think you'll be able to take another trip? I'd love to hear what you found.

Well Boof, I am on my way to Missouri for a scouting trip at the end of February. My husband and I are flying down for a few days to take a look at some houses and businesses for sale. We will be putting our house on the market in just a few weeks. I will let you know what I find. I will take some pictures with my cell phone and post them when I get back. I might even check out Mt. Vernon while I'm there.

There are alot of places to live in Mo. that are small no crime and beautiful. We have lived in Ellsinore Mo for 17 years, just recently moved back to my husbands hometown which is Ellington. We liked Ellsinore alot, extremely small but very peaceful. It is just 25 miles from Poplar Bluff, it also just 15 miles two ways to black river and Current river. One daughter and family still lives there, we also still own 2 acres and a home 18 months old there. A lot of people retire to the area, we did not go far just 45 miles.

That'd be Great to see what you think of Mt. Vernon. But I'd love to hear about all the different areas you visit. And pix would be fantastic!!! Thx!

Which areas do you think you'll check out, and what is drawing you to those areas? ----Boof

Debrar, thanks for the info on Ellsinore & Ellington. They sound like they are just what we're looking for. May I ask why you moved if you'd been there so long, and have a new home & family there?

What would you say are the pros & cons of those towns. We'd love to be in areas just like that, however, we'll still need to have employment....for a while. We're hoping to open our own business eventually. How far would you say it is to the nearest town(s) for work & shopping?

Gosh..So many questions!!! Sorry to bend your ear, but I'd really appreciate your insight. I guess it's because it'd be easy to drive through an area and see what it 'looks' like, but one still wouldn't know what it's like to live there, day in & day out....what the people are like, if the roads are bad, if the sewer system is bad and the streets flood all the time, etc....

I suppose if I could have my way, I'd just travel all over the U.S. and see for myself, but unfortunately, I haven't won the Lottery and my old rich aunt never existed. So, here I am.....

Thx, Boof

We will be visiting Marshfield, Ava, Billings, Mt Vernon, Mountain Grove and maybe a few others in between. These were on my list because we saw some houses that we liked in those areas as well as some businesses for sale. We would like to stay within a reasonable driving distance to Springfield since we have family there, at least within an hours drive or less.

Hey Boof, what type of business are you looking to get into? My husband and I just sold our bread distributorship and will be looking to get into some type of retail business. We are looking into the grocery, convenient, gas type of retail but might consider something like a family restaurant setting.

We've been looking all over the state, and are more confused now than when we started. So many nice areas....so I can understand why you'll be checking out so many areas. But it's nice that you'll have family there. We won't know a soul.

C, we're not sure yet, but we're thinking about a Health Food store. It's what I do now. But, my husband is also considering possibly something with woodworking. He'd like to get involved with the restoration of Historic/Antique homes.

It's funny you mention the family restaurant. We always talk about opening a little country kitchen. You know, the kind where the regulars come in and have coffee cups with their names on them hangin' from the cupboard? But, I just don't know if we can handle the long hours....getting up at 3:30a-4a everyday can get tough, ya know?

Anyhoo, that's what we're thinking.....What would you really like to get into? (Are we getting Off Topic?) C, you can PM me if you'd like.

Thx, Boof
