Ok had problems getting Insurance on our Home but finally did long as we converted our Fireplace over to Gas.Got it converted heats nicely but if we used wood it would heat twice the area.

We can get wood free but we can pay ahead on our Propane where it is a Low Payment each month. We found a company that will insure our place if we heat with wood but the rates will be much higher.Another thing to consider we are getting up in years but the exercise cutting wood is nice but bad if we don't feel like it but need it.

Ok do you think we should just continue with Propane or do you think it would be worth it to convert back to wood?? Heated with wood for last 60 years seems strange and wrong not to.

Have you looked at one of the outdoor stainless furnaces that are so popular now? It keeps the wood and the fire outside of
your house.

Check the policy. Does it say you are prohibited from adding a wood burner to the house?

"Seems strange and wrong not do" has no bearing on whether it's worth it or not. Also, it seems that this is a sentimental statement that has no logic behind it.

Question 1: How much more is the insurance per year for heating with wood?
Question 2: How much does it cost per year for propane?

Answer: If the response to Question 2 is greater than the response to Question 1, you should convert back to wood. Otherwise, leave as is.

Am I missing something here that should be making this a more difficult decision?

Are people having trouble getting insurance coverage if they have a wood burning fireplace? That's one of my criteria when buying a home; I want a natural wood fireplace. Those gas logs don't heat worth a darn unless you are right in front of it.
