I'm looking for non-salt water shrimp; my sister is allergic to the iodine content in wild shrimp. Any ideas where I can purchase good shrimp for her? She lives in Tennessee so I can ship to her.

The shrimp caught on Mobile Bay are sweet and come from brackish water...mix of fresh and salt. They
have a totally different taste from Gulf shrimp, which btw, are frozen in salted water. Ck with Southern Seafood in Mobile, and ask for bay shrimp. Good luck!

Shrimp allergy and iodine allergy do not necessarily go hand in hand. Where shrimp are harvested is no indication of the iodine level. Many people that have a contact allergy to iodine can ingest it just fine. I am going to give you a great link to explain more what is going on with your sister.

Farm Raised. Better quality, and much less health concerns than a fish caught wild.

Personally I don't care for farm-raised shrimp. They don't have any taste. I don't like real strong iodine taste either but I would rather eat 'fresh' shrimp.

Fresh wild shrimp for us, also! I rarely buy farm-raised seafood, and am especially particular about the country of origin of farm raised anything.

Default Where to buy Freshwater Shrimp

The US Midwest has many freshwater shrimp farmers and the quality of these shrimp is excellent. Many of the comments about how they taste inferior to wild shrimp are based on comparing the foreign farm raised shrimp to wild shrimp. Our domestic shrimp is very different. I think your sister will really like them.

Here is a link to the US Freshwater Prawn and Shrimp Growers Assoc. site - specifically the page with grower member listed on it.

I worked on several shrimp aquaculture projects in grad school. There are several producers in Alabama that supply to various markets around the state. These are saltwater shrimp. he groundwater in West AL is low salinity and can support saltwater species with some amendments. Freshwater shrimp are usually readily available at a lot of supermarkets around town as well. These are all farmed product, generally from overseas.
