Lived in Mobile for a year now and want to buy in Midtown. Family loves the historic charm of the area, our one concern is schools. Not wild about the public options there (the magnets are great but you can't count on getting in) and don't know enough about the private options. Any suggestion or insight would be very helpful. Are we wrong about the public offerings, or is there an unbeatable private option. Thanks.

The only schools that I can think of is St.Mary(elementary),McGill Toolin(high school),and another school that I can`t think of(middle). All are catholic schools and they are all in the same area near Lafayette street. Murphy high is a good school in the midtown area as well, and Dun Bar magnet (grades 4-8) is pretty good. I don’t know much about leinkauf elementary but it is in the leinkauf historic district.

You are right about the uncertainty of the lotto system for public schools. For private schools, look into UMS-Wright (unaffiliated), St. Pauls (Episcopal), and McGill-Toolen (Catholic).

I, and all of my 3 sibilings, have gone to UMS since at least 5th grade and it has been wonderful! I wouldn't change it for the world. I'm graduating this year and I know I'll miss it.

I will be sending my two kids to UMS-Wright. I like the environment that puts the focus on education.
