What if Mobile became consolidated with the county or just annexed a bunch of cities, what would be your thoughts. Here's a few areas (2000 Stats)

Add Mobile, Prichard, Chickasaw, Saraland, Satsuma, Creola, Theodore & Tilmans Corner. City size 262.4 Sq Miles, Land area 221.2 Sq Miles(Huntstville is 209.2 sq Land)
The population would be from 270-280,000 or if became consolidated would be full 413,000.

Whats yall thoughts on if this should or shouldnt happen?

I've always wanted this to happen... the city loses too much tax money when the city alone is pretty much the only reason people live in this county.

What would there be to gain from it?

Mobile already gets plenty of sales tax revenue from people that live in those areas, yet shop in the city.

Right, but they pay half the taxes on city services. For instance, people within the MPD jurisdiction but outside the city limits (about 60,000 people) pay only half for the same police, fire, etc. as those that receive those same services within the city limits.

If the recieve the same services that the people in the city limits recieve then they should pay the same amount of taxes and if it takes consolidating the city & county then I think that it should happen. If they consolidated them and made it equal throughout the entire city then will the city/county lower the taxes on the residents that are paying the full amount?

Just don't see it. The current trend shows Saraland, Satsuma and Chickasaw forming their own school districts and trying to cut ties with Mobile in every way. The only exception for these communities and their relationship with Mobile is reaping the rewards of efforts by Mobile officials to bring in industries like the Calvert steel plant that benefit all communalities. At best if you can get leaders of the region to cooperate, Mobile potential would really take off.

It would take consolidation because annexation can be tedious and would take a tremendous amount of political capital. Consolidation would then need to be seen as a unified effort across the county instead of primarily the effort of the city of Mobile. Some west Mobilians just do not trust city government for whatever reason.

It is very true that it would be a huge undertaking but if they could do it I believe the city would be better off... considering Mobile city services are already responsible for the vast majority of the county's population. If Prichard were to dissolve like it has been cited, this could be an opportunity to put the consolidation idea forward. I would doubt some places like Wilmer, Saraland, or Semmes being behind that effort though.

Consolidation would benefit, but would urgently cause a reform of our current government. Local governments/communities tend not to work good together, so there would need to be a new government that would benefit each community in the consolidated area.

Its time, we need to form a actual government and not officials just looking to fatten their pockets. We need true leaders that are thinking about the future for this city, and with the county, and 413,000 people as the base for the city, the area could truly sprout into a mecca for economic development and a residential haven.
