My wife and I are going to spend a night or two in Mobile next month on our way to Florida. We're very intrigued by Dauphin Street. Is it safe to visit at night? How bad of a panhandling problem is there??

We don't want to party or club or anything, but we do like to stroll and people watch. This seems like it would be a fun area. How is it on weeknights?

We're going to do Bellingrath and the Battleship for sure while we're here. I haven't been to Mobile since I was a kid. It sure seems to be a popular stopping place on the way to Florida

Stay in downtown. There is the Battlehouse hotel, a Hampton Inn, an Candlewood Suites, and a Holiay Inn and others. You will be able to walk to stuff if you stay downtown. Weeknights are a bit slow in Mobile because it is not the most cosmopolitan city. But there are art galleries, restauraunts and museums to see.

Nuhall gave some great advice. Also the Malaga Inn and a new really cool B&B in the Fort Conde Historic district. There are bars and lounges on Dauphin street so if you guys enjoy people watching then you guys should try the balcony on the Spot of Tea restaraunt. From there you will be able to see everything.

What weekend date you guys are visiting ? Because on certain days the city host the LODA art walk(which is on lower Dauphin street). And there will be the Gulf Coast Jazz and heritage festival in August if i`m not mistaking. The Jazz festival is really nice and family friendly with a nice crowd out.

Dauphin Street is safe. Will be tamer on weeknights, gets much busier on the weekends. Have fun.

The only true build-up of panhandling usually takes place in Beinville Square, which is a shame because it's a great square. They won't bother you though, and that area of Dauphin and St. Francis is still completely safe despite it. I like people watching in Cathedral Square near The Spot of Tea.

Don't set your hopes to high on Bellingrath, in addition to most plants being out of bloom, we've been in a serious drought for awhile now. I can't imagine it looks too great.
