20 miles from Fairhope to Mobile is what my distance calculator is telling me.

They do have billiards at the Nix Center there in Fairhope.

I wondered the same thing, and was fairly surprised at how few 55+ communities there are in the entire state. Only five that I can find, none of which are in the coastal area - 2 in Huntsville.

This site has been very helpful when I've looked for this information.

Found a few more 55+ communities on another website I've found helpful:

Is anyone familiar with The Colony at the Grand or Rock Creek?

Rock Creek is a large subdivision, with a beautiful golf course. It is NOT a retirement community just a subdivision like you find anywhere USA. I lived there when we first moved to Fairhope while our house was being built in Ono...and then again when we got back. They have patio homes to huge mansions...

The Colony at the Grand is the only high rise in Point Clear...on a beautiful golf course and lake, and attached to Lakewood Country Club. Nice concept, floor plans leave a lot to be desired.

The state does run the liquor stores, called ABC stores. Beer and wine are sold in grocery stores but no hard liquor.
And no Trader Joe's or Costco?????? Yikes - that's a big disappointment.

Does Kroger have a presence in the area? I don't know what name they would use - in AZ, it's Fry's. In other parts of the country, it's Fred Meyers.

LoL, welcome to Alabama! You sound just like the California peeps moving to TX on the Dallas forum... and before you ask... there are no In & Out's, either!

As far as Kroger's, there are currently only three locations in AL and none in the Mobile/Baldwin County area, i.e., Auburn, Bay Minette & Brewton, AL only. Rumors continue that they will be moving into the Mobile area, but who knows for sure.

However,
Publix does have a main presence in Baldwin County and I love this store... locations in the area include Daphne, Fairhope, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach. As far as a Trader Joe's, are you kidding me, lol! Probably not in this lifetime!

Costco also has only three locations in Alabama - Hoover (Birmingham), Huntsville & Montgomery - none in the Mobile/Baldwin County. The closest to this in the area is
Sam's Club which is in Daphne, AL - there may be others, I don't know.

Once you've had the pleasure of TJ's and Costco, you really do miss them. Quality, selection, prices, convenience and great customer service. Both businesses have earned and deserve their almost religiously devoted customers.

Neither Bay Minette nor Brewton has a Kroger.

As mentioned, Publix has a presence in Baldwin County which many people find better than Kroger (people in areas that have both). The biggest chain in this area is Winn-Dixie.
