I just retired from the Army and started a new career that puts me on the road 2-3 days a week. The rest of the time I'm working virtually from home. Right now I live in Enterprise, AL but they would like that I move closer to one of their facilities after about a year or so once my wife retires from the Army. I can choose to live near Mobile, Pensacola, NOLA, or Baton Rouge.

I'm leaning towards living near the vicinity of Mobile (30 to 45 minutes). AL won't tax our retired military retired pay, and I believe the property taxes are lower in AL than they are in FL or LA. I know FL doesn't have an income tax, but I think that gets offset by property taxes and insurance costs (especially if you're south of I10).

The office I'd be based out of is in the vicinity of Tillman's corner. I've heard Bay Minette is nice and has that small town America feel to it.

A big concern will be schools (our kids are in elementary school right now). We're also concerned with flooding. And I hate having to say it in this day and age, but we've also got to be cognizant of how the people in the community view interracial marriages.

Would really like to be able to get a decent sized plot of land, where I can have a shop with a lift to work on cars and what not.

If I were you I would look more toward Satsuma or Creola.

You are right about FL property tax it is very high compared to AL. I wouldn't live in Bay Minette and drive to Tillmans Corner as that is a long drive. I would look at some other towns as Tillman's Corner has a lot if issues from what I have read here. Honestly, you might like Mobile mid town. Quaint housing and many nice ppl there plus some good schools.

What is your price range?

Why those areas? The schools or the other reasons I listed? You can PM if you want to.

Price range is going to be around $300K. We'd like a large 4BR with enough property to have a detached shop, garden, etc. I'm based out of the office there at Tillman's corner, but I don't have to physically work there. I travel 2-3 days a week, and work virtually out of my house the rest of the time. Optimally, I'd like to be within an hour of there.

You might want to check Baldwin county...Spanish Fort or Daphne. Both have great schools and homes in your price range, and within an hour or less from Tillman's Corner.

Well Satsuma is a small town, but still in Mobile County so your commute wouldn't be too terrible. The residents there just voted to break away from Mobile County school system to form their own school system (just like neighboring Saraland).
