I am moving to mobile AL, from cary nc. I was born and raised in the cary area. I do have some what of a northern accent and I am very liberal. I was wondering if coming from north carolina will alabama be a culture shock for me. Where I live in cary there are a lot of healthy places to eat and shop. Growing up in cary i don't really notice the accent but a lot of my family who lives in Texas said the cary accent sounds like upsate ny. I am really excited for the move and hope that southern alabama is not to much of a culture shock. Also is the weather in alabama mild during the winter. In north carolina you need a snow shovel and salt. Do I need to pack warm in the winter? Thank you
thank you.

Would it be a culture shock if you moved from Cary to say... Fayetteville?

If so, you may have a problem. Cary is not typical NC.

+1 for midtown. Liberals are many there. Also the Prichard, Creighton, Toulminville, DIP areas have large liberal populations. Prichard hasn't had a Republican elected in decades.

As for the accent, not a big problem. As you get closer to MS, the accent may be noticeable.

Um, the poster is from Cary which is NOTHING like Prichard or Toulmanville. That would be a culture shock for sure.

I grew up in Raleigh, NC and now live in Midtown in Mobile. If you love Cary, then you are used to newer subdivisions, so Spanish Fort may be more to your liking. But if having some liberals is more important to you than track housing then consider Midtown.
Cary is a nice place but growing up in Raleigh we always called it "Scary" because everything looked the same and you could get lost trying to figure out which 2 two story white clad house was yours. Kidding. But seriously Cary is not known for historic housing stock, so you may want to look across the bay at the Eastern Shore.
