Mobile's economic future looks bright | Fox10tv.com

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - BAE Systems christened a new ship on Mobile Bay on Thursday. Unveiling new vessels continues to be a sign of the times in Mobile.
FOX10 News spoke to Mobile's Chamber of Commerce on Thursday about our economic outlook.
They said Mobile can thank mother nature, engineering, and history for making it an attractive place for business.
"I think we have a lot of key infrastructure that plays to our advantage: a deep water port access, two interstates, five Class 1 railroad lines and then two airports," said Leigh Perry-Herndon.
Herndon said BAE Systems shipbuilding has grown dramatically in just one year.
"One of the great things about BAE Systems is they compete on so many federal contracts; do so much military work . And the stuff they have in the works promises more good news for Mobile," said Herndon.
Thursday, BAE Systems splashed some champagne on its newest ship, American Phoenix.
It's the largest ship to be built in Alabama, 616 feet long, 105 feet wide.
The massive chemical tanker will move crude oil from Texas.
BAE Systems has other good news, too: it is continuing to grow and will add about 1,000 new workers by this time next year.
The Mobile chamber has been helping this growth.
"The majority of our focus has been helping companies overcome their barriers that might have to growth. There's been a tremendous amount of investment along the waterfront in order to help existing business grow," Herndon said.
Herndon said Alabama's industrial development training is key to developing Mobile's workforce for this growing need.
BAE Systems needs all kinds of skilled workers and officials there said they welcome hard working and motivated people to apply.
