Mobile County school board to consider selling 2 historic school buildings

Quote:
MOBILE,
Alabama

– Mobile County school system officials will ask the school
board to approve the sale of two historic properties, the Old Shell Road School
and the Russell School building, to Georgia-based developer Pace Burt Jr. for
$800,000.

Burt made the offer to the school board for the two properties
last fall.

Old Shell Road School, at 1706 Old Shell Road, has been
vacant since May 2012, and the Russell School building, at the corner of Broad
and Augusta streets, has been shuttered for several years. It was last appraised
about six years ago at $572,000.

The Mobile County school board is expected to vote on the sale at its May 21
meeting. The terms of the deal call for a closing date of no later than Dec. 31,
2014.

"It's been a long time coming," Burt said Tuesday. Local firm Vallas Realty
is representing Burt in the negotiations.

Burt gained a foothold in Mobile last summer, when he bought the 75,000-square-foot office building at 951
Government St.

to convert into upscale apartments.

He hopes to begin construction on that project within the next 90 days, he
said, so the timing is right to get started on the school buildings, which he
also intends to convert into lofts, or what he described as market rate,
loft-style units.

His developments focus on historic preservation and tend to enhance urban
areas, he said, because they're usually located within walking distance of the
city's center and therefore encourage people to move downtown

Finally !! And what a great move for the city and surrounding communities. Both the Russel and 951 Govt st building will compliment the Oakleigh historic district. There was a previous developer who wanted to turn the 951 Govt st building into a storage , Thank GODDDD that was rejected back to Hell. And the Old Shell Rd School building will benefit from being close to the cities growing medical district.
