Working in dowtown mobile. Two kids under 5. Schools are very important. I lived my entire life in south MS until 7 years ago. I have family in West Mobile and on the MS coast. What is the commute like to downtown (RSA area)? What is the main difference in the schools on the eastern shore and those in West Mobile? Greatschools.com generally rates the West Mobile schools as highly as those on the eastern shore, but I keep hearing I should live on the eastern shore or send my kids to private school. Any input is appreciated.

There are several great public schools in Mobile E.G E.R Dickson. And there are great magnet schools as well like Clark and Council. The schools in Mobile perform at the level if not better than those in Baldwin. George Hall for an instance is in one of the most poverish neighborhoods in Mobile but they are out performing some of the welthest schools in the state. My best advice to you us to visit both areas to see how you feel about them. The Eastern Shore is nice but Mobile is not a bad place to live either.

Eastern Shore is great to visit as I do several times a year but I find it a little isolated. I prefer Foley over Daphne. Daphne is just suburban sprawl. Foley still has areas of reality.

Mobile is a real city with all that goes with it. Traffic, abundant choices for shopping, great places to dine and good schools and not so good. Take a look and trust yourself.

I think PORT CITY's advice is spot on.

Wow it's interesting that you said that I have always said that Foley offers more than Fairhope and Daphne and seem bigger as well even though the numbers don't reflect that.

It's just obvious I guess. But maybe the congestion in Daphne is such a turn off to me. (that is why I spend a good bit of time in old Fairhope.............eating.
