For all of the urbanization in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, apparently cotton farming is still a big business there. I saw a cotton field near Saint Elmo earlier this month. Have you seen cotton fields near your new subdivisions?

I haven't noticed much cotton planted this year. A lot of corn though.

The most popular crops here in Baldwin County are corn, cotton, peanuts, and grass (yard type, not burning type....). Most of the cotton has already bloomed and is forming bolls. It will be harvested in late October through November. Peanuts will also come in about the same time. Kinda neat to watch the harvesting of the peanuts. They bring them up out of the dirt and let them dry a few days, then specialized equipment strips the legumes and puts the plants back on the ground to be dried more and bundled for feed. It can get quite dusty doing that. Most all the cotton is picked into the big truck-sized bales. The plants are then usually mowed down and plowed under. I guess as long as new house construction is booming like now, sod farms will stay busy. I see 18 wheelers of sod all the time, going all over. Not sure, but I think most of it is bermuda and centipede.

You may also see smaller fields of sorghum and melons.
