Moe's Original Bar B Que is heading west. To west Mobile, that is. The popular barbecue chain will open its second Mobile location with a spot near the busy intersection of Airport and University boulevards. Owner Mark White said he expects the new barbecue restaurant and bar to be open around the first of the year. "Let's get one more good holiday under our belts before we start full speed with our newest restaurant," White said.
The restaurant at 4672 Airport Blvd. will occupy a spot that has been home to several eateries over the years. Located right next door to Mosley's Meat Market, it began as a Wendy's Hamburger restaurant and has been home to Little Dick Russell's Barbecue and more.
The restaurant already had a smoker on the premises, White said, and the renovation is expected to go quickly and smoothly. "We are going to change the whole face of it. We'll be putting some Moe's touches on it and making it cool," White said.
It is a smaller footprint than the usual Moe's pattern, with just slightly more than 2,200 square feet of inside space. But White said they are installing a small bar, a bushwhacker machine and a few tables. The menu will be just like the one at the downtown Mobile Moe's.
"We'll still have daily specials, barbecue ribs, fried catfish and everything else you can get downtown," he said. "We're very excited about moving west, especially being close to the university," he added.
