I live on Airport and the traffic is crazy as everyone knows but I made a little map with my own ideas on how to fix, maybe some have already been suggested.

The idea is make Airport and Cottage Hill straight and narrow and make them freeways, no stop lights but have exits. Next extend Dauphin all the way too Airport. It comes to be almost a straight line and would connect with Airport but this part would no longer be Airport because of the freeway being straight. There would also be a loop freeway around Mobile. I'm guessing it would cover around 90-95 percent of all residents in the city.

Other things include extending Grelot to I65, straight and narrow and extending Demetropolis to Airport and University to Cottage Hill. They would no longer connect and change names.

The last part is a traffic circle with 4 streets tying into it, being Grelot, Hillcrest and two new streets, one from Cottage Hill to Airport and one from Airport to the new University extension. The circle would be at Grelot & Hillcrest

It comes to about 60 miles, just over 35 being freeways. I think the cost could be from $500m to anywhere up to $1.5 billion.

You should look at the map to get the idea, and sorry if it confuses you, just something I put together.

Oddly enough, a series of limited access loops across west Mobile has been in various stages of planning for decades.

I never knew they planned one to loop around. After searching I found mentions of it but no plans. I did find one site that a guy had his own plan, he called it I210 Here

I just think of the congestion it would save but mine also includes a traffic circle, that would make it even easier to get to parts farther away much quicker.

I've long contended that all the traffic lights they continue putting up and down Airport blvd do nothing to help with congestion and actually increase it.

Since I moved to Airport a few years back, they've put up about 4 or 5 new lights. Not to mention Whole Foods is getting their own light making it 5 or 6. Also alot of the lights are timed and need to be based on the cars waiting.

Airport at Hillcrest, the Airport time is so long that at 5 pm all the cars will run through and for a minute straight no one will be coming through and it is still green. A couple other ones are set up routinely whereas they go in a specific order each time no matter if there is a vehicle there or not.

They need to take down some lights and the ones they keep, upgrade them to being based on the cars waiting rather than suggested times and patterns.

Whole food doesnt need a light. Azalea and airport intersection is the worst in the whole city.

Man I agree 1000 percent. The way McGregor is rigged up right there and just the intersection in particular sucks. I just read on al.com that whole foods is getting a light which means there is gonna be a line longer than space available at the light.

I've always thought University @ Airport was the worst. Takes forever to get through it.

it all make sense but you have to understand the city, airport was design so you would have to stop at each light, they want you to get stuck in traffic so you will look around, I need go this store, or pick up something here. you really think that light at moody meat market changes just after the university turns green by chance. no its design to stop traffic. we talking sales tax here.
