65 basically is the bypass for west Mobile. Coming into Mobile from the north, 165 takes you downtown and 65 is the bypass.

For Mobile to be as big as it is, intestate access is awful. People in WeMo suffer with traffic and it will only get worse. Mobile's growth is going west and everyone wants to live in the suburbs. Mobile will eventually have to get some sort of bypass, I believe.

According to an old 1960s street plan for the area, Greater Mobile would have two other Beltline-quality highways in west Mobile beyond the airport.

What happened to those plans?

Default 1960s-Era Master Street Plan

The two limited access highways, Eight Mile Creek Parkway and Chickasawbogue Parkway, would have connected I-65 to I-10.

Airport Boulevard would have had a less substantial role in the development of suburban west Mobile

I wish there were some type of bypass that started around Saraland, then headed SW towards the airport, and then to I-10.

Will they ever finish 158 and connect it to 98?

It's sad to travel on 98 and 45 and once you cross into Mississippi....the roads magically turn into 4 lane divided highways!

Mississippi had its act together to revamp their roads to help with the flow of traffic should another hurricane strike the coast. Alabama is years behind bringing these roads up to the same standard...

This is true, but remember that ALDOT has to spend a fortune on matching funds for quite a few more larger cities than Mississippi does. And roadwork in the four largest cities cost a lot more than the connector roads.

Go drive across South Carolina and you will feel a lot better. The hit the Wall of Eden when they cross into North Carolina.

It kind of does already 158 runs into Shcillinger and Schillinger Rd is being 4 laned from Howells Ferry to 158 and from 3 Notch to Cottage Hill. Currently it's 4 laned from Coattge Hill to Howell's Ferry and after the completion it will be 4 laned from 3 notch to the 158 connection.
